Family:  Mint (Lamiaceae)

Hardy to Zones 4 to 9

(Austrian Sage) Herbaceous perennial native to highlands of Russia and Eastern Europe, flowering white to pale yellow to a height of 3 feet–multiple upright racemes from a large, incredibly flat, malodorous basal rosette of coarse leaves.  Flowers in the first year and ongoing.   The plant attracts and feeds bees.  Traditional use: Source of taxodione, a diterpenoic compound that has anti-inflammatory and tumor reducing effects.  The flowers are showy and may be used in cut flower arrangements.  Sow seed in warm soil (circa 70 degrees F).  Barely cover, tamp well and keep evenly moist until germination, which is rapid.  Work plants up in pots and transplant out to a spacing of 2 to 3 feet between the plants.

I am so entranced by this salvia- and I have a thing for salvias. I am eager to explore it medicinally, and it is such a graceful and charming addition to the herb garden. I would have liked a higher germination rate, as ended up giving plants to my sister and a couple of friends, but I think this next time around I will have better success, and I plan to try it in several different locations to see how it does. I feel like I have known this plant in a previous incarnation!

Hi Melody, Scant in the literature, although apparently consistent with the activity of taxodione. Stay tuned because I am in the midst of investigating this further by way of communicating with people living within the native range. richo
