(Official Rhubarb, Da-huang, Chinese Rhubarb, Rheum officinarum) Biennial or herbaceous perennial native to China and Tibet. Vigorous plant with huge, entire, decorative leaves, edible stalks and laxative roots. This is the easiest of the medicinal rhubarbs to grow.  Traditional usage (TWM, TCM): Laxative.  Produces masses of creamy, white flowers. Highly adaptable to various growing conditions, including clay soils. Prefers a full sun position. Sow in spring, just beneath surface, and work up in pots until the seedlings have leaves the size of your hands. Transplant out, and leave plenty of room–they can easily stretch to 3 feet.

      Hi Richo!
When you say these stalks are edible, will they have the same laxative effects as the roots?
I’ve got 8 of them growing in my greenhouse, they are beautiful. I can’t wait to set them out in the yard to see them get to their full size in all their glory.

      Hi Elizabeth,
Thanks for contacting, and I really appreciate that you did well with these, there is so much that can happen to a rhubarb between sprout and planting out! The part used in American culinary arts is the leaf stem, the part used in TCM is the root. One is a food, the other is an astringent laxative. Richp
