Pumpkin, Jack O’Lantern (Cucurbita pepo), packet of 10 seeds, organic
$3.95
Family: Gourd (Cucurbitaceae)
Annual. 115 days to maturity.
(Halloween Pumpkin, Pumpkin Pie Pumpkin) Vining pumpkins, fecund fruiters. Great for kid’s gardens or for adults to grow for kids. Pumpkin carve-able, flesh makes good pies. Also, the seeds can be lightly toasted with a little salt or eaten raw and uncooked–usually but not always shelled before consuming. Traditional usage (TWM): prostate health. Prepare the hill or the bed with plenty of aged manure or compost, direct-seed the seeds, and choose the three best seedlings from the hill (or if row cropping, thin to 1 plant every 3 feet). Keep weeded and watered. Vines will soon become self-mulching. Harvest fruits right after first frost, wipe clean and carve!

Jack o lantern variety is a large-ish yet tasty pumpkin, vigorous enough to out-compete a blackberry jungle. Glad to find it here. Other large pumpkins are increasingly derived from field pumpkins, which taste like wet sawdust. I find small-fruited pumpkin and squash to be less vigorous growers.
