Pepper, Xigole (Capsicum frutescens), Packet of 10 Seeds, Organic
$3.95
Family: Nightshade (Solanacea)
~50,000 Scoville Heat Units
90 days to maturity
(Soltero, meaning “bachelor,” an allusion to the shape of the fruit and the tendency to remain erect.) Traditional type from the mountains of Oaxaca. Very hot, red when ripe, small, barely tapering, upturned on the plant. Good choice for potted culture. Tends to overwinter readily (with protection, of course!) Cultivation: Peppers prefer a scanty, even water supply, good drainage, full sun, and a long, hot summer. Start indoors 40 to 50 days prior to the last frost. Thin seedlings to at least 2 inches apart in the flat. Transplant out to garden after the soil has really warmed up. Space plants 2 feet apart.

Hi again, I’ve been trying to find an answer online. Do hot peppers cross pollinate? I heard they self pollinate. I do not want them to cross with other varieties. Also if they self pollinate can I grow them in a green house and let them fruit without bees? Thanks!

Hello Ian,
Thanks for staying in touch. You never know about online info, could be based on experience, could be filler put there to get hits. Page 126 of my upcoming book “Growing Plant Medicine Vol 2” covers this: “Flowers of peppers are hermaphroditic and self-fertile. Some crossing will occur when insects get involved. Outdoors, grow in blocks of a single type, separated by rows of basil, tomatoes and other medicinal herbs. This will limit accidental hybridization. For the sake of purity, isolate different cultivars 150 feet apart.”
Yes, they can be grown in the greenhouse, one type at a time, and the resulting seeds will be pure to the pepper. We grow our Aji Amarillo this way and they are quite dependable.
Richo
