Peony, Tree (Paeonia suffriticosa) seeds, organic

$4.95$99.00

Family:  Peony (Paeoniaceae)

Hardy to Zones 4 to 10

(Paeonia suffriticosa, Mountain Peony, Mu-dan, Feng Dan Bai) Woody perennial deciduous shrub native to China.  Although the seed really does take a long time to come up (one to two years*), it is a very robust germinator (falling into the self-generated class of “volcanic germinators”) it is quite reliable.  After the wait, its always a surprise when they do germinate–almost always in the spring.  The best way to control the seeds, I have found, is to plant in good potting soil in gallon pots and keep in the shade house.  Mulch the pots to keep them from drying out.  Seedlings should be individuated after they set their first true leaves, and grown out in gallon pots for another year at least before transplanting to the landscape.  The plant prefers part shade and a cool root system.  Plant grows to as tall as 6 feet, and may be set to the landscape at least 6 feet apart.

The seed I planted six years ago has her first blossom! I am in love with a flower?! She even takes her time opening the blossom, each day just a little more…the anticipation! Many seeds planted last year have sprouted, too. These are delightful.

I’m so very excited to see my peony tree seeds have sprouted this spring. I planted them in Oct/Nov of 2020 & it is now Mar 2022. What a fun thing to see them pop up after so much time. I currently have 8 seedlings.

Hi Chelsey, Just have to say good for you for creating the right circumstances for the expression of these seeds. Also I share your excitement–mine just germinated as well. Watching easy germinators like ashwagandha and spilanthes come up is always gratifying, but how much more so for long germinating seeds. Peony are 2-phase germinators and may go a whole season in root phase before even becoming aerial. richo

I’d like to buy some of the plants you mentioned above. How long do they need from germinated size to blooming?

Hello Han, They’ve already been potted up, hit “waitlist” and hopefully you’ll be able to get a plant once they size up. My experience is that they take 3 years to bloom. Richo
