Tower-of-Jewels (Echium wildpretii), packet of 30 seeds

$3.95

Family:  Borage (Boraginaceae)

Hardy to Zones 8 to 12, more frost hardy if kept dry

Cone-shaped biennial to 6 feet tall, endemic to the Canary Islands. The leafy rosette gives rise to thick, upright columns bedecked by rows of coral flowers.  These make an impressive show in warm weather gardens, growing particularly well on the California and Oregon coast, where they prefer full sun and get by on scanty water.  Press seeds into surface of fast-draining mix and keep evenly moist, warm and in the light.  Germination 1 to 3 weeks.  Space plants 4 feet apart, these grow quite large.

30 seeds/pkt., Open Pollinated, Untreated, NO GMO’s

I’m in zone 7. Could it be grown as an annual? Would it flower during the season or does it take a year or two for it to get big like shown?

Hi! They make a very cool rosette in the first year and make the conical flower head in the second year only. These really do best on the coast but you can make them work in a zone 7. Give perfect drainage and if they overwinter you’re in for a treat. richo
