Onion, Red Long of Florence (Allium cepa), packet of 100 seeds, organic

$3.95

Family:  Onion (Alliaceae)

Biennial, often grown as a quick, showy bunching onion.  Creates elongated bulbs in 90 to 100 days.

(Rouge de Florence)  Italian heirloom from Florence.  The onions are tender, mild and sweet, richly endowed with antioxidant anthocyanins, colored red to purple.  This is a long-day variety that requires 14 to 15 daylight hours to bulb.  Short-term storage OK.  Seeds may be sown fall or spring.  Sow in flats or directly in the garden.  Barely cover seeds, tamp securely and keep warm and evenly moist until germination.  Thin or transplant to 6 inches apart.  If starting early in flats, keep the tops trimmed back to 4-inches in order to encourage early bulbing.  This makes a great transplant!  Otherwise, grow at close spacing and harvest early like a bunching onion.  They can be peeled to reveal the rich coloration.
