Family: Figwort (Scrophulariaceae)
Hardy to zones 5 to 9
(Turkish Mullein, Broussa Mullein) Showy biennial to 6 feet, native to NW Turkey. The plant has 2 growth phases, making a large rosette of broadly pointed leaves in the first year, rising to an impressive multi-stalked flowering candelabrum in the spring to summer of the second year. Traditional usage (TWM): antioxidant, wounds, infections, ear oil, cough, bronchial congestion. Source of saponins, flavonoids and phenylethanoid glycosides. The plant is heavily felted with white. The flowers are somewhat larger than those of official or Greek mullein. The flowering stalks tend to curve and reach out to a great distance. Flowering period is extended. Flowers useful for making ear oil, leaves useful for mullein leaf applications. Plant prefers full sun and dryish soils. Deer resistant. Drought tolerant. Pollinator friendly. The seeds are light-dependent germinators. Sow in spring by sprinkling on soil surface and tamp securely, then keep warm, evenly moist and in the light until germination, which is rapid. Thin or transplant to 2 feet apart.
