(Anise Hyssop, Licorice mint) Short-lived herbaceous perennial native to Ontario and the central and near-western US. Beautiful, purple racemes are delicately aromatic, a fine tea herb with a sweet, anise flavor. Traditional usage (American Indian, TWM): Carminative and flavoring agent. Flowers 3 to 4 feet tall. Plant prefers full sun to part shade and moist, rich soils. Sow seed on surface, tamp in securely and keep evenly moist and in the light until germ, which occurs in 1 to 2 weeks. Thin or transplant to 1 to 2 feet apart.
