Perennial in Zones 10 to 12, otherwise grown as a long-season annual, 200 days to maturity

(Luffa aegyptiaca, Oriental Luffa, Smooth Luffa, Vine Okra, Discloth Gourd, Sponge Gourd, Dhundul)  Vine native to India and Asia.  Flowers golden yellow.  Especially in India, the immature fruits are cooked in curries or eaten raw in salads.  Traditional usage (Ayurveda): cooling demulcent, increases bile flow, facilitates lactation. The mature fruit may be dried and used as a sponge in the sauna. Plant prefers full sun and rich soil, moderate watering.  Start indoors to get a jump on the season,  or in zones 10 to 12, plant in the spring in a mound and thin to 3 best seedlings per mound, then trellis or grow on a fence.
