Love-in-the-Mist (Nigella damascena), packet of 50 seeds, organic

(1 customer review)

$3.95

Family: Crowfoot (Ranunculaceae)

Annual, self-seeding, 90 days to flowers.

Native to the Mediterranean.  This is a cultivar selected here at Strictly Medicinal Seeds, with frilly foliage and bright purple flowers giving way to decorative pods.  Seeds are edible and impart a nutmeg flavor and jet black to decoration cakes, candy, and cookies.  Plant prefers full sun to part shade and fast draining garden soil, rocky, gravelly or poor soils.  Direct seed in garden bed in fall to early spring.  Easy and dependable, always enjoyable, no need to thin, they cooperate nicely in a garden bed.

    Gorgeous and Easy to Grow

The description is accurate, these seeds are so easy to grow and this is such an enjoyable plant to have. I directly seeded in a couple pots and quickly had bunches of Love-in-the-Mist growing. My watering was sporadic, but the plants didn’t seem to mind. The flowers are stunning and so unique! Probably the most beautiful thing I grow. After flowering the plant produces seed pods packed full of seeds. You can just pick the pod off the plant and shake out the seeds. They are quite delicious! Kind of a mild anise flavor with a little nutmeg. I munch on them straight from the plant, but they would also be great in baked goods. The plant reseeds readily – in the second year the Love-in-the-Mist which started in pots had spread its seeds to a very rocky area with poor soil near a pathway where nothing else grew – except for the Love-in-the-Mist! I love discovering it growing new areas and it adds an exotic beauty to the garden. Although it reseeds readily the plant is easy to control since it really only seems to grow in the spring and the plant itself doesn’t spread very much.
