Family: Brassica (Brassicaceae)
Biennial, winter hardy in zones 7 to 10, sometimes colder
(Jersey Kale) A nutritious and robust kale, working equally well as a tender spring green or as a sweet-fleshed winter vegetable. Heirloom from the Channel Islands, specifically the Isle of Jersey. May be allowed to overwinter and go to seed. The elongated stalks can then be made into walking sticks. Pull up, remove lateral stems and dirt, cut off root, allow main stem to dry and cure in a warm, dry location. Sand and trim, then shellack. Standard Kale culture: Plant seeds in early spring or fall, in pots or directly in the garden. Thin or transplant to 2 feet apart.
