Herbaceous perennial with leathery leaves and bright yellow flowers with distinctive black wings. Seedpods decorative, blue-black. Native to the American Southeastern seaboard and Southern states. Blue dye-plant. Traditional usage of the tincture of dried root (TWM, Eclectic): Sore throat, smoldering infections. Plant prefers full sun and dry or gravelly soil. These are dependent on a supportive mycoecology. It may be helpful to plant in soils that have previously grown legumes or to inoculate with a broad spectrum mycorrhizal inoculant. Work seedlings up in successively larger pots and set to landscape after sufficiently sized. Space 2 to 3 feet apart.
