Family: Mint (Lamiaceae)
Hardy to Zones 6 to 12
(Mexican Giant Hyssop, Mexican Lemon Hyssop, Lemon Licorice Mint) Herbaceous perennial to 5 feet tall, native to Mexico, flowering abundantly in extruding corollas, colored light crimson. The leaves are smooth. Both leaves and flowers extraordinarily fragrant–a complex aroma that is most inviting. Traditional use (TWM): a cooling and delightfully lemony tea herb. Traditional treatment for liver ailments, jaundice. The wildlife and pollinator attractor tends to create a dense monotypic stand that stays put. Scarify seed lightly on fine sandpaper. A 30-day period of moist refrigeration can improve germination, which is generally challenging on this species. Also, despite the fact that the plant is visited continually by bees, seed production tends to be scanty. Surface sow, tamp securely and keep evenly moist until germination. Transplant or thin to 2 feet apart. Flowers occur starting in the first year.
