Dragon Tree (Dracaena draco) potted plant, organic
$31.00
Family: Asparagus (Asparagaceae)
Hardy to Zones 8 to 12, otherwise grown as a potted plant and brought in for the winter
Tree-like monocot to 25 feet tall and equally as broad. Native to the Canary Islands, Cape Verde and Morocco. Widely cultivated as a curio worthy of the finest botanical gardens. Anyone in the Western US that wants to see a really sweet stand of these comely trees, with their solid trunks and palm-like foliage, can find them at San Diego Botanic Garden in Encinitas, California. Surely one of the most unusual trees on earth, they appear to be–not from earth. The flowers are white and deeply perfumed. Dragon tree is one of the several sources for the aromatic, garnet-red resin known as “Dragon’s Blood.” Traditional usage: wound dressing, diarrhea, ulcerations and eczema. The plant prefers mesic to dry conditions, well-drained soil, and sun to part shade. Keep plants in potted culture (the photo is of one of my year-old individuals) or if environment permits, plant outdoors at a spacing of at least 30 feet apart.

Question
Don W. –
We spend time in Ecuador, where another resin “dragon’s blood” comes from the native Croton lechleri tree (and incidentally which is sold by your nearby HerbPharm.)
Do you happen to have information about possibilities for growing Croton lechleri in this country? We are in Florida, where the environment is similar to the Ecuadorian rainforest where Croton lechleri grows.

hi don, right, there are several sources for “dragon’s blood” and croton is as close as one can come to “official.” I don’t have any resources for this. The HP material is imported.

Question
Patricia –
What size pot are the plants for sale in?

Richo Cech –
Hi Patricia,
They should be 4 or 5 inches tall pots. We don’t list pot sizes because we continually upsize our stock. We do have a policy of shipping largest plant first, so your early order will assure largest plant available. richo

I live in zone 6-7. How big a pot would you plant this in? And do they grow as big in a pot?
