Herbaceous perennial native to Central and South America, with a current worldwide distribution. Flowers oversize even for such a large plant, and completely tuned to the moon. Flaring trumpets, moonshine white, narcotically scented, almost enough to make you swoon! Traditional usage, external only (TWM): asthma, motion sickness, pain. All parts of the plant are toxic, no part of this plant should ever be taken internally. Plant prefers a sunny, mesic to dry location, and will grow in poor soil, sand or cobble. Space plants 3 feet apart.

Can these be grown inside? Zone 4, many of the flowers I like are not cold hardy. Just wondering if these moon flowers can thrive inside

Fine to grow as a summer annual in the garden or potted plant in the greenhouse, sunroom, maybe even a sunny windowsill. They like to get big before they flower, though, so it might be oversize for indoor culture.

Hi Richo, mine just flowered here in the potted garden in NYC. But the plant herself is not exuberantly growing! healthy looking but only about 1 1/2 foot high at the moment and it is late July and already with a single bloom. I’ve got this one growing in a 10 gallon planter. does this plant need more root space perhaps, that I am providing?

Hello Lyla,
Thanks for getting in touch. There are things you can do to get these to perennialize, and I note that you are in a colder zone than the usual recommendation (although you can readily grow this as an annual and it is effective that way and our plants are outstanding this year). Choose a sunny site that is extremely well-drained and in the autumn after the plant freezes back mulch heavily. Richo
