(Black Neem, Sweet Neem) Tropical to sub-tropical evergreen tree to 18 feet, native to Southern India. The pinnate leaves are handsome, as are the small, white, fragrant flowers that give way to clusters of black berries. The curry tree leaves (which should be confounded neither with the compound spice “curry” nor the curry plant (Helichrysum italicum), are used as spiritual offerings and lend their unique taste and aroma to Indian cuisine. Traditional use (Ayurveda): as a spicily aromatic culinary herb, stir-fried as a base for curries. Also as a medicinal herb: upset stomach, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, dysentery, hepatitis, anemia, diabetes, heart disease and high cholesterol. Plant prefers tropical sun to part shade, fast-draining soils and regular watering. Best in tropical humidity but possible as an indoor plant or patio plant brought in for the winter. Plant prefers sun to part shade and rich, moist but well-drained soil. Keep them warm, give bright light at a minimum of 6 hours per day, good air circulation and water sparingly during winter.

Hi Antonio, We suggest repotting the tree to a larger pot and setting in a sunny and warm position. Be sure to use a fast-draining mix and free up the roots at transplant–don’t leave them in a potbound lump… then it will grow bigger. Richo

Got question on how to harvest and store:
Should I harvest the older and bigger leaves usually on the bottom first?
And if I prune the top of the plant, will it stop growing tall ?
And can I store the ‘air dried’ leaves for later use? or other methods you can recommend?

Hi Jaclyn, thanks for contacting. Useful questions. You have it right–harvest the lower leaves and let the young leaves at the top grow to continue to produce the healthy plant growth. Top pruning will cause a stop in the growth until the plant eventually branches out from that point. It can take a year or more to recover, I don’t really recommend it. The best use is the fresh, lower leaves as a base for curries. I don’t know of any cooks who use the dried leaves, but I suppose it can work in a pinch. For medicinal applications, the fresh leaf tincture may be employed. cheers on this fine day! richo

Received this healthy curry leaf tree that I planted about 4 months ago, in a east facing location with afternoon shade (Zone 10a).
Kinda slow growing but the scent of the leaf is so inviting…
I have an observation that: With the presence of a stoneware container next to it, it is exhibiting more healthy growth… Just want to share….

Hi Jaclyn,
I think it makes sense to accustom the plant to full sun slowly–especially when its fresh out of the box. Yes, definitely, repot to a gallon and work it up to size before planting out. I think afternoon shade is fine–these grow more or less as an understory botanical and they like dappled sunlight. Oh, they do attract plenty of pollinators to their white flowers.

Hello Archana, I’m actually not sure if this is “gamthi” or not. This is the standard type, fast-growing, with thick, aromatic leaves. A cursory look into varietals of this species gave pretty mixed info–I’m pretty sure what we have is not the “dwarf.” These are seed-grown, and often select varietals do not breed true from seed. The ones we sell have worked well for us and others. Richo

We had sudden temperature drop in September here in NY and my curry tree was left outside. I brought it in but since then most of the leaves fell off, and it’s looking kinda sad. I see some new grows coming out but very little. Do you think it will recover and bounce back?

Thanks for staying in touch. When this happens to me I snip off any dead tissue in order to promote the regrowth. A sad curry leaf tree is sad indeed, I can relate. I do have a large planting of new ones I’m working up, and they look very nice, so you might want to buy one just to be sure. Shipment will be in the spring. Richo
