(Schizonepeta tenuifolia) Aromatic annual herb growing to 4 feet tall, native to China. Traditional use (TCM): One of the warming Chinese herbs that releases the exterior, usually used in tea form. The plant prefers a sunny, warm exposure and a fast-draining soil of medium fertility. Scarify the seed lightly on medium grit sandpaper and surface-sow on sandy medium and press in firmly. Keep evenly moist and in the light. Germination requires 1 to 3 weeks. Start in greenhouse and work up in pots or direct-seed in the spring garden. Space plants 1 foot apart.
