Carrot, Cosmic Purple (Daucus carota), packet of 200 seeds, organic
$2.95
Family: Carrot (Apiaceae)
Biennial. 65 to 75 days to maturity
Sow in spring, or for the fall garden sow July-Aug, 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep. Germ in 10 to 21 days. Prepare a fine seedbed and make furrows with your fingers and sow lightly. Barely cover seed and tamp in, then keep evenly moist until germination. Thin to 2 inches apart and cultivate often until they size up. Cosmic Purple is rated excellent for attractiveness and taste. They are purple skinned and orange fleshed–spicy and crunchy. Late season harvest showed fatter carrots, flesh quality holding nicely, sweeter than the carrots from early harvest. Tapered roots average 7 inches long. An excellent (not boring) cooking carrot, to braise or slice into soup. For the market grower, these are usually also the first to sell out at farmer’s markets.

Hello- new to gardening and wondering what “cultivate often as they size up” means? Sorry, I’m sure it’s an obvious answer!

hi erin, put your fingers in the soil around the plant. Break up the soil around the crown of the plant and remove any weeds. Also thin the carrots to a couple of inches apart. Sizing up is when the plant goes from a seedling to a reasonably sized plant that will have an edible root. r
