PS on Calendula seed germination. Have you ever noticed how calendula volunteers with fall-strewn seed germinating and growing in the spring? If you take care of those volunteers, they really do make great plants. Anyway, this means that calendula seed is loaded with germination inhibitors–otherwise the fall disseminated seed would germinate immediately in the fall, and it doesn’t. So, when planting calendula, make sure to sow the seed early enough in the spring to mimic this natural process. Allow the seed to be in the soil, cool and well-watered, starting as soon as your ground can be worked, and you will see good results. Even seed sown midspring and kept nice and moist usually germinates fine. However, if you plant the seed late in the late spring to summer and it gets really warm and possibly not as moist as it needs to be, you may get a zero germ on it. That’s all I’m saying. Richo

Hi Richo!
I am watering the bed where I grew calendulas grew last year and there are plenty that are coming back up but there’s a lot that are coming up in the pathways. I am wondering if there would be any likely success in transplanting what I have in the pathways into the bed to fill in the gaps?
Thank you!

hi james, calendula is a very unhappy bareroot transplanter, but it can be done with cool days and plenty of water. Its so easy to seed it in, most of us don’t bother. But volunteers, yes, they can be quite happy if weeded, thinned, composted, watered–they’ll do everything. Funny they like the path. I think its because the soil is tamped there. Teaches us to tamp. richo

I started my seeds indoors under lights and then transplanted outside. I harvested the flowers and they were so sticky! I was super excited because I know what that meant! Packed with goodness!!! I’m getting ready to press my first tichure ever and this is what I used.

Richo Cech –
hello antoinette, not really with good results, as it is a quick-growing annual that won’t produce much indoors–it is a flower of the spring sun. richo

Can this be used medicinally? I see it states at the end of the paragraph that “ It is a strong, diverse cultivar.” I am brand new wanting to start an herbal garden for tinctures, salves, etc so am learning. I live in WV and have two raised garden beds or will keep in pots as the soil is shale.TIA 🙂

I planted these seeds, and was shocked to see sprouts at the end of day 3. Looking forward to growing these out a bit and moving out to the beds. Hopefully they will take off and reseed themselves! Thanks for providing such high quality seeds!
