(Indian Physic) Herbaceous perennial, perfectly cold-hardy, native to the deciduous forests of southeast through southern US. Traditional usage (American Indian): indigestion, colds asthma and hepatitis. Horticulturally exciting due to its multiple starry flowers white with reddish highlights, reddish fall foliage and relative rarity. Plant prefers part shade and forest soils, but will tolerate sunny borders and dryish soils. Sow seed in fall to very early spring, with germ in the spring as the ground warms up. If it’s already getting on toward summer, give the seed a 30 day period of cold, moist refrigeration prior to sowing in warm conditions. Space plants 1 foot apart.
