Would these do well in a flower bed built around a tree? Unfortunately my existing garden space doesn’t offer dappled sunlight.

hi chris, sounds like they would be getting some shade in that position, which is helpful. The caucasus type is more sun-tolerant. richo

So far so good, after one year!
Belladonna came back after a rough winter of very cold nights and see-sawing temperatures into the spring.
She is bushy and looking like maybe flowers are coming. Fingers crossed, Right now she gets shade and some western sun in the afternoon, which isn’t perfect, but she’s near the house and I gave her lots of bonemeal, egg shells, compost and love.

Plants are perfect! May harden off larger leaves during transplant.

Hi Mike- I’ve been extremely successful sprouting & growing A.belladonna indoors under lights where they grow huge! I put them outside in the Spring. Amazon has great inexpensive grow lights.

  6. Question

I purchased one of these live plans from you and it’s doing fairly well. I have it in a clay pot on the porch in Baltimore Maryland. The summers here are quite humid and the winters have been mild the last couple of years. I do have a growing room inside where I started the plant It’s currently outside, Where I currently have the plant positioned is providing it with shade and about four or five hours of Direct Light. It’s planted on the due west side of the building. I have noticed that when it’s very hot the leaves get droopy. I did transplant it but it’s been over a month. I could use some suggestions on The type of fertilizer NPK ratios to give it. I have amend the soil with ground up eggshells pulverize to the consistency of baby powder and watered it in. I have done a great deal of research on the soil but I’m not sure really how much I should be adding to this. I’ve been very careful to use only biodegradable and natural composts in small amounts such as pulverize duck eggs and used coffee grounds also a very small amount of clay powder I used and mixed in with the egg shells. Only about a teaspoon of both. I would really appreciate some suggestions on the NPK and the soil moisture. I have done a great deal of research but I am finding some conflicting information.

Hello Shane, Thanks for staying in touch. Clay pots can dry out quickly and this can cause drooping of the plant in a full sunlight situation. It is best to grow Belladonna in what we call light shade, that is a shady situation but enough sunlight to afford efficient photosynthesis. Shade dappled with sunlight is good. The plant prefers a rich soil of slightly acidic pH and can be fertilized with comfrey leaf tea, compost tea or dilute fish emulsion for best results. The use of ground eggshells is fine but what you have already added is probably enough. Now concentrate on keeping the plant shaded and well-watered in the AM only and weekly application of weak teas as described above. Marginal leaf damage is probably from dehydration and sunburn. I grow Atropa belladonna from seed and I’ve also bought live A.belladonna from Strictly Medicinal. Aside from growing indoors under lights, I’ve had success outdoors growing her in dappled sunlight. Too much sun shrivels her and not enough makes her drop leaves. The dappled sun is perfect and I’ve also found this plant to be a phosphorus hog. So I use Tiger Bloom by Fox Farm 2-8-4. My Angels Trumpets love this food as well! Don’t get discouraged- it took me awhile to figure out a good outdoor growing area. I’m in Zone 9 in Northern CA. Happy growing!

Product arrived moist, if shallowly rooted- which allowed for easy transplant into a larger container. A month later, both plants are vigorous with new growth. Gonna wait a while before I transplant into the garden. Extremely pleased with them.

This is one of a few plants I ordered. Each one was very carefully packaged, so well that it took me a minute to figure out the system. Do not let shipping deter you, this shop places a great deal of effort into ensuring that plants arrive healthy no matter how far they travel. They provide instructions and a catalog. I will definitely order again. They answered all questions with patience and helpful information even before an order was placed both by phone and online. The reviews on the other plants purchased will be the same because this is true for every single one.
