(Christmas Lima Bean, Chestnut Lima, Giant Speckled Pole Bean, Giant Florida Pole Bean)   Heirloom pole bean climbs to 10 feet, producing large pods filled with the mottled seeds that are each about the size of a quarter.  Heirloom variety dating back to the 1840’s.  Beans are delicious fresh shelled and steamed or allowed to dry and made into soup.  They have the consistency of baked potato and taste like chestnuts.  Plants are very robust, quick to climb, tolerant of heat and very productive.  Plant grows best with regular garden culture, in fertile soils, given full sun.  Plant 3 or 4 seeds per pole, about 1 inch deep.  Germ in a week in warm soils.  Plant is typified by fast, vigorous growth.  Give plenty of water during growing phase and then stop watering to finish.

      Hi Jerry, different types of runner beans (Phaseolus coccineus) readily hybridize but lima beans (Phaseolus lunatus) don’t readily cross with runner beans. Different kinds of runner beans need to be separated by a good distance from eachother otherwise they will cross. Different kinds of lima beans can be grown quite close to eachother without crossing. Same with regular beans (Phaseolus vulgaris). Richo

      Yes, they are good when in swollen, green stage. Remove from pod and braise with onions, garlic, and a bit of tomato to keep the beans moist long enough to cook through. salt, summer savory, then eat. r
