Tobacco, Black Mammoth (Nicotiana tabacum) seeds, organic

$3.95$52.10

Family: Nightshade (Solanacea)

Annual: 80 days to harvest

(Small Stalk Black Mammoth) This is a Kentucky specialty tobacco that produces large, pointed leaves on a plant to only 5 to 6 feet tall.  Tends to create multiple flower heads of pink and white.  The plant holds itself upright on green (not black) stems, bearing clean leaves (less sand lugs).  When finished, this is considered a dark, wrapper or snuff tobacco.  Is it more “mammoth” than a standard Virginia smoking tobacco?  Not really, although due to its short stature the leaves may look comparatively larger.  Cultivation: Tobacco prefers a full sun position and regular watering.  Press seeds into surface and keep warm and moist until germination.  Tobacco is a heavy feeder, give composted chicken manure. Space plants 2 feet apart.

1 g contains ~10,000 seeds

If you could give me any tips for growing tobacco successfully in Florida, what would you say? I’ve got many plants going but most haven’t reached their potential 4-5 foot height. Perhaps Florida’s tobacco season is not two part, but just one during the summer.

Hi Brandon, A bit puzzled by this, but will do may best. Why puzzled? Because the sandy soils of florida have been employed for tobacco cultivation since pre-contact times and tobacco is still a viable cash crop in your state. Tobacco grows pretty fast. Requires a good supply of nitrogen–insufficient fertility might cause a hesitation in growth. Regarding choices, our “Tobacco, West Indies” is a selection that will grow very well in places without winters. Sorry I couldn’t be more helpful. richo

tobacco seeds do not need a winter to germinate. they are standard warm soil germinators and can be worked up in the usual manner. growers do use a floating tray method for these, but i never bothered.

Hello, my Black Mammoth plants are doing very well so far this year as things heat up. I started early and transplanted much sooner, I have barely watered this time around. I am about to sow some more varieties in trays, in direct sunlight. All my plants fare much better planted outside in direct sunlight with a bottom water tray. I would absolutely love to start an idyllic tobacco farm in Florida.

Starting plants in the shade here just doesn’t work, hot or cold, they stunt and become leggy quickly. But starting them in direct sunlight was tough too due to scorching midday, until I got nicer bottom watering trays. In direct light with adequate water, they almost grow too fast! Peppers that take a month to germinate sprouted in 2 days… This might be my best gardening year ever.

I sowed almost 400 peppers plants to accompany my tropical perennials such as Everglades tomatoes and bananas. To top off spring I will be ordering more of your tobacco and some uncommonly seen varieties, Jojoba, Yerba Santa, Lotus, Nigella, Ashitaba…

I’d like to travel to the Japanese tropics one day and search for rare seed.

Richie : it delightful to see your still growing strong. I used to see you in Bl mtn at the herb school. Now living in TN. Different growing climate here, but good. I hope the two tabccos do well we have plenty of both rabbit and chicken manure to put out, plus composted other manures. Peace and good growing. Judy LeRoux
