$31.00

Family:  Fabaceae
Tropical hardwood.  Protect from frost.  Stately tree that bears the fruity pods, sweet/sour, a stomachic, culinary and beverage ingredient.  The pulp of the pods is high in tartaric acid and pectin and is used as a natural food stabilizer.  It is a good source of Niacin, calcium, phosphorus, iron, thiamine and riboflavin.  The tamarind pod is a highly significant food in the African continent.   Tree prefers full sun and dry to mesic soils. May be kept indoors as a beautiful potted plant.  Nick seed with a blade until endosperm shows, then sow in warm, well-drained soil.    Seeds are quite large.  Germination is rapid.  Pot up and grow in a gallon pot for a year before transplanting to landscape (southern california, gulf coast, florida, hawaii and other tropics.)
