Hardy to Zone 5 to 10
(Lycium chinensis, Chinese Matrimony Vine, Box Thorn, Go-Qi-Zi, GO-CHI) Deciduous woody shrub to 9 feet tall. Native to Northern China. Goji berries are used fresh, juiced or (more commonly) dried and used like raisins. Traditional usage (TCM): Yin tonic. Plant prefers full sun and fast-drying soils. High desert conditions are quite conducive, or regular garden conditions on the dry side. Goji plants are drought-tolerant. 4 to 5 years maturity, 15 year or more lifespan. Space plants 3 feet or more apart.

Hi Evan, Yes, although some of those may be Lycium chinense. There isn’t much practical difference between them. I really recommend our goji plants and am excited to field grow them myself this year.

Right, that is probably true. These are from seed and now a year old. They won’t fruit until next year earliest. We have field specimens that are 4 feet tall and pencil-thick–same stock. Still, I’m not really convinced about goji from cuttings–it is a drought-tolerant plant that relies on a taproot, and seeds make a better taproot than do cuttings. . . r

Hi Mary, Thanks for writing. Lycium ruthenicum is powerful–that’s the black goji = Russian Boxthorn. We did have that at one time, from seeds cultivated and collected in Yunnan, and made the mistake of overselling our stock. So, somebody out there has it, but not us, not anymore. Its on my “greatly desired” list. Richo
