Tower-of-Jewels (Echium wildpretii), packet of 30 seeds
$5.14
Family: Borage (Boraginaceae)
Hardy to Zones 8 to 12, more frost hardy if kept dry
Cone-shaped biennial to 6 feet tall, endemic to the Canary Islands. The leafy rosette gives rise to thick, upright columns bedecked by rows of coral flowers. These make an impressive show in warm weather gardens, growing particularly well on the California and Oregon coast, where they prefer full sun and get by on scanty water. Press seeds into surface of fast-draining mix and keep evenly moist, warm and in the light. Germination 1 to 3 weeks. Space plants 4 feet apart, these grow quite large.
30 seeds/pkt., Open Pollinated, Untreated, NO GMO’s

Denver front range 3 years later, worth the wait! Started under lights, transplanted up to 3 gallon pots and grew outdoors summer through fall. Overwintered in front of a south facing window in an unheated garage. Stayed green all winter. The leaves are soft and fun to pet. 2 plants, the ones against the window, survived the winter. Planted outside mid-April in full sun. They were snowed on twice, placed a bucket over them and they did fine. Set up drip irrigation for consistent watering. These plants became very large and look very exotic even in the rosette phase. The plants grew all summer and fall. They seemed happy but slightly annoyed at the Colorado weather extremes so of course no flower stalk. End of fall dug them up and transplanted them into a 10 gallon and 8 gallon pot. They took the transplant surprisingly well. Through the winter, I would leave outside if projected night temperatures stayed above 20 degrees. If below 20 I would move them into the garage, too big for the window now so they would not get very much light when inside. During the day move them back outside against a south facing brick wall if it was warm enough. Very warm winter this year in Colorado both plants began to shoot flower stalk late march. Now when you would walk by these plants it seemed like the stalk was looking up at you like a sitting dog waiting to be petted. So our course I’d give it a pet, so soft. First flower May 2nd, everyday there were more flower and more bees. Full flowering glory reached approximately 15 days after first flower and stayed in full flower for about 10 days. I would leave a photo but do not see the option. The flowers stop pretty quick. This plant really is a show plant absolutely spectacular and worth the wait! Watching the bees feasting on early exotic nectar is very entertaining. These can be grown in 8 and 10 gallon pots. Flowering is probably a shorter time frame than if in the ground. I may try 15 gallon pots next year and/or overwinter in a 5 gallon not 3 gallon and see if I can get them in the ground to flower bigger and for a longer time period. Looks like I’ll have plenty of seed to experiment with. Thanks for having these high quality, rare plants and seeds available!

yvette, this would work in colorado only if you overwintered it once indoors and then set it out early to bloom. r
