(Cancer Weed, Lyre Leaf Sage)  Herbaceous perennial native to central and eastern US.  Basal leaves bear striking purple variegations, the outer margin resembling perhaps the shape of a lyre. Traditional use of root, leaf and seed (TWM, American Indian):  a salve used for healing wounds and treating abnormal growths.  Flowers pale blue to lavender, deep throated, with a characteristic dorsal ridge, on a raceme to 18 inches tall.  Grows in regular garden soils and is particularly fond of growing in lawns, where it co-exists harmlessly with lawn grass.  Sow seeds in spring.  Germination takes about 2 weeks.  Work up in pots before transplanting to garden.  Space plants 1 to 2 feet apart.

Does this seed need moist stratification? I have read conflicting reports. Thanks!

      Hi Emily,
Thanks for writing. Germ takes 2 to 3 weeks in warm soils. See “Growing Plant Medicine Vol 2” for an in-depth monograph that includes this info. All the best, Richo
