Family:  Aster (Asteraceae)

Hardy Zones 3 to 8

(Elf Dock) Herbaceous perennial. Native to southern and central Europe, the Balkan Peninsula and central Asia. Giant plant bearing handsome, yellow flowers. Harvest the octopus-like roots in the fall of the second year’s growth. Traditional usage (TWM): bronchial infection, pneumonia and debilitating, chronic cough. The plant is processed to yield a blue dye. Plant prefers part shade and evermoist soils, although full sun will be tolerated.   Sow seed in greenhouse in early spring or sow directly in garden in mid-spring. Light-dependent germinator (plant on surface or only very shallowly covered, so light can penetrate). Expect excellent germination in about 12 days. After second set of leaves appear, transplant seedlings out to the garden, even if you still expect a few frosts. Grows in full sun or partial shade. Plant 2 feet apart. This is pure seed, with pappus removed.

    Super-strong plants

These seeds readily germinated and dependably grew into the 6-foot-tall beauties, with lovely yellow flowers and huge leaves, that I’ve come to expect. Now I’m processing a pile of roots, recently harvested from my 2-year-old plants. Already have a big batch of tincture from last year’s roots. As always, this was a boffo Strictly Medicinal product!

Hi Lynn, Nice job on those root slices, that is precisely how they are supposed to look. Elecampane–one of my top go-to herbs for treating upper respiratory issues. Can be lifesaving. Richo

    Becca

Is this something deer would eat or chipmunks? Do any of your books cover how to harvest and use the roots?

Hi Becca, Thanks for writing. Chipmunks and deer do not eat Elecampane. You can find detailed information in both “Making Plant Medicine” and “Growing Plant Medicine Vol 1.” This plant has saved many lives and is a standard go-to for our family when upper respiratory infection gets scary. richo

Not sure on how to best do a preparation so they just grow out there. Survived brutal winters and summers.

I was planning to plant these seeds on the outer edge of an old tree where the ground can become soggy in the spring with heavy rains and remain that way for a week or two. Or would by a woodland stream be better? If not, can you make other suggestions? These are the only places on my property which are “evermoist”. Thanks. Love the site. Have a hefty order, but just found out through a comment that you have more than seeds?
