Native to the Eastern hardwood forests, this plant adapts beautifully to the shade garden. Choose a protected spot with deep, slightly acidic, loamy soil and dappled shade. We offer potted goldenseal for those that would like to plant a patch during the spring or summer months, when it is not seasonal to plant bare roots. Early orders will be shipped while plants are barely breaking the surface of the pot, a good time to transport them without breakage and a good stage for planting as well. These are sturdy adult plants that will likely bear fruit within a year or two after planting. Traditional usage: TWM, bitter, astringent and antibacterial. Plant to rich soil in hardwood forest dappled shade, shade garden or shaded greenhouse and mulch. Space plants 1 to 2 feet apart.

Hi Carla, Thanks for writing. Comfrey is one of the fastest-growing plants I know, and Goldenseal is one of the slowest-growing plants I know. Comfrey likes full sun and Goldenseal likes shade. Goldenseal is patch-forming and does best when planted several plants together. It can take 3 years or more for them to become rhizomatous and begin to spread. Hello Charis, We don’t sell goldenseal potted plants in September. Find the GOLDENSEAL ROOTS item and order that. Goldenseal roots are planted in the fall and come up in the spring. The plants and/or the roots cannot be kept indoors through the winter–they require a cold dormancy. Goldenseal is in short supply this year and probably ongoing. I noticed the stock is already drawn down significantly. Please order soon in order to receive your roots. We will send them in October. Richo

I just received my goldenseal plants in the mail, very excited! Question: I get voles, seems like more and more of them each year. Can’t seem to find an effective way to get rid of them (preferably without killing them). Should I plant my goldenseal in a gopher shield net? If so, what size would you recommend? Or maybe pots instead? Thank you!

Goldenseal does grow well in pots–use 1 to 3 gallon pots, goldenseal does love compost, and mulch. Also, the roots are very bitter and most burrowing animals will not bother them. Keep in shade garden, forest or under benches in greenhouse.
