Bulbous, corm-forming herbaceous perennial native to Europe and flowering to 18 inches tall. The spadix and spade are green and yellow respectively, sometimes fancied to represent sexual union, thermogenic. The columnar fruit clusters are a showy bright orange. The entire plant is loaded with calcium oxylate, usually employed symbolically, ingestion not advised. Plant prefers rich soils in the shade to part sun, growing well in gardens and woodlands. Sow seeds in fall or spring in shadehouse or unheated greenhouse. Use rich soil and mulch thickly with decomposed leaves. Germination may require as long as a year. Do not transplant until cormlets are formed. Space plants 1 foot apart.
