Annual, 90 days to maturity from transplant, 103 days from seed

(Seed Queen Watermelon) Heirloom.  Vine bearing large round to oblong fruits, shiny, dark green to black, rind very thick, flesh sweet, seeds large and numerous.  Our’s averaged 15 lbs apiece.  Traditional use:  Food.  Mild urinary tract infection.  Diuretic. The seeds are chewed up or ground and made into a tea.  Source of the alpha-amino acid known as citrulline, a potent urinary diuretic and antiinflammatory, helping rid body of metabolic waste.  Watermelon prefers rich, sandy soil and does best in the full sun.  Sow indoors 3 weeks before last frost date in gallon pots and transplant.  Or, seed directly in the garden once the soil has truly warmed up.  Plant 1/2 inch deep and tamp securely.  Germ in one week.  Thin or transplant to 3 plants per hill, and space hills at least 6 feet apart.  Watermelon require plenty of room to grow!
