(California Redwood) Evergreen tree native to coastal regions in northern California and Oregon, growing to 350 feet tall and capable of living up to 2,000 years. Prefers to grow in part shade in deep, well-drained soils containing plenty of carbon-rich mulch. Prefers climates with cool summers and mild winters. Capable of absorbing water from fog, directly through its bright-green, flattened needles. The reddish bark is fire-resistant. Excellent carbon sequestration. Spring-harvested needle tips can be made into a tea high in vitamin C, which was used by early sailors as a cure for scurvy. Poultice of hot leaves used in treating congestion, earache and infection. The wood is rot-resistant. Space 30 feet apart.
