  1. Question

    Allegra Chesnut

You mention that both flower buds and seeds are edible. Can you tell me how large the plant has to be before it flowers? Can it grow large enough in containers (24″ planters) to flower? I’m flat out of room in my raised bed garden and containers are my only option. Zone 10a here. Thanks for your advice.

hello allegra, nice to hear from you, I can’t really recommend joshua tree on the basis of its edibility–it takes them decades to flower. dragon fruit cactus would be my recommendation–good in containers in a z 10, fruits very tasty, i have these fruiting now in my greenhouse. grow 3 for pollination. they can even share the same container. r

Thanks you for clearing that up; I’ll do as you suggest. Though I think I’ll still order some Joshua tree seeds. Lately I’ve been reading that they could well be headed for extinction in the wild given climate change, so time to preserve another threatened species. I appreciate your willingness to advise your customers and share your knowledge with us. It’s a rare thing to find these days.

This is a high desert species but not usually as high as 7000 feet. The potted trees are pretty adaptable–you might have trouble trying to grow it in the ground. r

hello bear! no, this would not grow outdoors in michigan, you’d have to keep it as a potted plant, protected in the winter. r

hi christina, 9b is good for joshua tree. it wouldn’t be cold that would hold it up, rather moisture, too much of which can be fatal to them. provide sun, fast-draining soil and protect from rain. r
