Erect, branching, evergreen shrub flowering to 6 feet tall, native to California and Southern Oregon. Very rare to find in herbal gardens, anywhere! The long, lance-shaped leaves of this plant are coated with aromatic resin, making them sticky and shiny. They make a great offering when burned. Traditional usage of dried leaves (American Indian, TWM): cough, upper respiratory infection. The flowers are beautiful, purple/lavender tubes 1/2 inch long, ocurring in clusters at the top of the stems in the months of April through June. These nectarific flowers are adored by bees and other native pollinators. Plant prefers full sun and moderately fertile, slightly acidic soils. Standard garden soil will work fine, although very rich soils are not recommended. In nature, the plant is most commonly found in dried waterways, rocky outcrops and trailside on south or east facing slopes. Space plants 3 feet apart.

I just got my Yerba Santa plant from strictly medicinal Seeds, but I cannot find info on watering it. I live in a hot, dry climate. How often and how much should I be watering it?

Betsy, The leaves of Yerba Santa are thickly lacquered with resin. They are drought tolerant to the max. We hope you can find just the right spot for this, and ask you to provide a review.

The plant arrived quickly. I was worried about how well the Yerba Santa would survive transportation from Oregon to New Mexico. However, Strictly Medical Seeds did an awesome job of packing the plant securely and carefully! My Yerba Santa looked healthy and totally intact (zero leaves fell out) right out of the box. I may buy another one next year 🙂 Thanks.

Hi Patricia,
Yerba santa is very rich in resin and oil and needs to be kept in a very sunny spot. It probably wouldn’t do very well kept indoors.

Hello, we live in zone 6 and would like to plant some Yerba Santa, do you think it could fair well if I surrounded it with a white insulated fabric barrier around a wire protector in winter? I’m thinking a cylinder of livestock wire around it and white landscape felt around that to allow
Light to permeate. We have several south east locations along our creek but it is blocked from
Some sun from a rock mountain and trees. The next best place I foresee it on top of our rock cliff area. It has plenty of sun all day and trees line the surrounding to protect it from
Wind.
Thoughts please?

Hello Kimmys, Yerba santa does well in cliff areas in full sun. However, yerba santa is famously difficult to establish. My advice would be to get some seed–it is inexpensive –the new harvest is in–and try starting it from seed, as this is usually the best way to acclimatize plants to the conditions at hand. Richo
