Yarrow, Coastal (Achillea millefolium L. var. litoralis), packet of 100 seeds

(4 customer reviews)

$3.95

Family:  Aster (Asteraceae)

Hardy to Zones 4 to 8

(Oregon Coast Yarrow, Coastal Yarrow)  Native to the coast of Oregon and California, this is the largest flowered yarrow worldwide, with flattened heads that can reach 8 inches wide (see photo).  Furthermore, they are aromatic to the max, provide a heavenly retreat for native pollinators, are vigorous spreaders and protectors of coastal bluff and other lands threatened by erosion. Traditional usage (American Indian, TWM): astringent, hemostatic, antibacterial.  Plant prefers full sun and fast draining soils.  Sow seed in spring and transplant after the seedlings are big enough to thrive on their own.  Space plants 3 feet apart.

100 seeds per packet, Open Pollinated, Untreated, NO GMO’s

    Bountiful medicine

Because my coastal yarrow is so vigorous and fluffy, everyone else’s (official) yarrow is looking rather anemic in comparison to mine. I am so thrilled with the quality of medicine produced by this plant. This yarrow is highly aromatic, robust, and productive, and the medicine produced is highly potent and effective. It’s beautiful too, with a nicely filled out growth habit (yarrow sometimes looks leggy to me), and plentiful and large clusters of white flowers. Highly recommend!

I should also note that I am in zone 10 (SF Bay Area), and the yarrow has been happy propagating itself in my yard for a couple years now.

Hi, How large of a square foot area does 100 seeds of Yarrow usually cover well?

My flowers are not as big

    Nicola

The flowers are more or less the same size than my usual yarrow, but I still find it an interesting plant because the leaves are much bigger and more aromatic.

      Hello Nicola,
An interesting comment in that the flowers on our coastal yarrow are several times larger than those of the mountain yarrow. I guess there are regional variables involved here.

Can this species of yarrow be used just like official yarrow (for teas and such)?

Yes, they are medicinally interchangeable. The mountain type is a bit more concentrated in active constituents.

I find my coastal yarrow to be highly medicinal. I can tell that yarrow is potent when it tingles in my mouth. I get LOTS of tingles from the fresh leaves of this plant, often more than I do from the “official” kind growing around here. For whatever that is worth!
