(Betonica officinalis, Woundwort) Herbaceous perennial hardy highly adaptable to lowland sites as well as gardens at altitude.  Native to Europe and Russia.  This moisture-loving plant is a clumper, making a lush mound that flowers in multiple upright racemes red-purple.  Generally made into a tea of the dried herb or a tincture of the fresh herb.  Traditional usage (TWM): acute or chronic pain, addiction.  Sow in the early spring.  Standard greenhouse culture or direct seed.  Barely cover seed, tamp well and keep evenly moist until germination, which occurs in 1 to 3 weeks.  Space 1 to 2 feet apart.  Flowers from 2 to 3 feet tall.
