Herbaceous perennial native to mountain streams of Japan. Our variety is MAZUMA, which is one of the main types–beautiful, vigorous and HOT. This is the true wasabi. We have grown this seedling in standard greenhouse culture (on the cool side) and offer nice starts. These are not grown in aquaculture although we think they could be transplanted to aquaculture. Otherwise they do well in a bed of rich, moist soil in the semi-shade and misted daily. Space plants 1 to 2 feet apart.

I live in zone 5a. Can I bring this in for the winter in a pot by the window? Or cover it up with mulch outside for the winter?

Hi Rebecca,
Thanks for writing and wanting wasabi. Zone 5 is cold for overwintering it–we have the plant listed to zones 7 to 12. Wasabi can be overwintered indoors in a window. The ideal temp is 70 degrees F which is room temperature. It does suffer with dry heat so it can be futzy to have to keep watering and spritzing it. Older, discolored leaves should be immediately removed. I find that zone 5 gardeners are happiest growing wasabi as a shade garden annual. The main thing is to remember to use it, which makes it all worthwhile. Richo

Hi Maedeleine, Wasabi can handle high temps in the shade. The ideal temperature is a cool 70 degrees with mist. That is what it takes to produce the root of commerce. Those of us that grow the plant in standard greenhouse conditions pretty much get used to eating the leaves. richo

hi, thanks for asking. the wasabi will flower and make seeds starting in the early spring of the second year and every spring thereafter. the leaves can be harvested and used in, for instance, sandwiches or sushi rolls, any time they look good. The stem portion that is traditionally grated into the hot green condiment forms as the plant matures. r
