Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanoides) potted plant, organic
Family: Grass (Poaceae)
Hardy to Zones 7 to 12, a good winter survivor in colder zones if potted and brought in to a sunny window.
(Khus Khus, Chrysopogon zizanoides)
Perennial grass. Native to East India, Burma and Ceylon. Hardy to 20 degrees F. Give sandy soil and full sun. Excellent erosion control plant with myriad applications in permaculture and ecological land use, mainly in warm desert areas, tropics or subtropics. Medicinally, the rootlets are infused in water to make a cooling summer drink that is kind to the stomach. Produces a superior fragrance for perfumery and cosmetics. Dried and rolled, it is an Unani treatment for headache. A little puff will do. The scent is fairly well-known to many of us, as it is one of the predominent essences in “nog champa” incense. This cultivar does not make seeds, and may be propagated by cuttings only. It is not invasive.
