Vervain, Blue (Verbena hastata) seeds, Organic

$3.95$44.10

Family:  Vervain (Verbenaceae)

Hardy to Zones 3 to 7

(American Blue Vervain, Swamp Verbena) Upright yet creeping, self-seeding herbaceous perennial native to the Eastern US.  Bright blue flowers on reddish-tinted plants, in multiple, long-lasting, handsome spikes from 3 to 5 feet tall.  Fresh or dried leaf is the part used.  Traditional usage: indigestion, colds, and fevers.  A good ingredient for home brew, it is also a traditional offering plant to honor the garden spirits.  Plants prefer full sun to part shade and moist garden soils.  Good drainage is not a necessary prerequisite.  If there is a concern that the plant will spread, then keep it in a pot, or provide other suitable barriers, and cut back the flowers after peak display.  Sow in the early spring or give 2 weeks cold conditioning by putting seeds in moist medium in a plastic bag in the fridge (not freezer) and then sow in warm soil.  Barely cover and tamp.  Germ in 2 to 4 weeks.  Space plants 2 feet apart.       .

Packet contains 100 seeds
1 g contains ~3,500 seeds
5 g contains ~17,500 seeds
10 g contains ~35,000 seeds

I didn’t pay attention to zones when I ordered. Are there any tips that might allow it to grow in 8b? My person is one of the “stiff-necked overachieving list makers” for whom it’s recommended

Hello! What is considered early Spring in Salem, Massachusetts? To direct sow. Or could start in pots indoors if needed. Trying to grow Artemisia vulgaris, Trifolium pretense, Hyoscyamus niger, Chamaemelum nobile, Datura stramonium, Verbena hastata. I only have a large balcony with a 6x2x3 raised bed and some other large planters. No yard. Do you think the planter could fit maybe two or three of those and then the others in the large planters?

hi steph, the blue vervain is frustratingly slow from seed and cold conditions are important–that one could be planted now in the planter or in a pot. the rest would do fine planting in April in your area. I would make the planter work for all of them, triangulating at about 6 inches. r

him aryanne, thanks for getting in touch. seeds can be stored in their paper packet in a sealed glass jar in the fridge. most types last for years that way. the blue vervain lasts for decades that way. some seeds are short-lived and need to be planted immediately. packet instructions are specific to the seeds inside and will let you know if the seeds are short-lived. r

Can V. urticifolia be used interchangeably with V. hastasa? I planted V. hastasa a few years ago and it died. Surprisingly, V. urticifolia has emerged in its place. No one planted it it there!

    Hello

Hi, is the stem of this plant worth using compared to leaves and flowers?

Hi, actually the stem isn’t that valuable compared to the leaves and flowers. We normally strip the seeds and flowers to make the tincture. I recommend the book “Making Plant Medicine” which indicates all the preferred plant parts for scores of popular species. Richo

The plant will placate ills, real or imagined.  Once imagined, ills become real, don’t they?  It’s a quirk of the human condition that most of us would like to escape.  Vervain helps you escape.

Most herbalists will make a tincture of the fresh or dry herb. You can find recipes for this in “Making Plant Medicine.” r

Container gardening is my only option on my patio. Can I grow Blue Vervain in containers? If so how many seedlings can I fit in a larger pot?

hi christina, the Verbena officinalis would be better for pots because it only gets half as tall. i usually put 3 per pot in that kind of situation. plants seem happy in 3s. r

I was wondering if Verbena hastata has been known to hybridize with Verbena officinalis. Thank you!

Sorry for so many questions (earlier about the Violets), but now I have a few about the Blue Vervain 😉

I just now got a chance to put them in moist medium in the fridge. You recommended for two weeks, then sow warm. Does that mean I plant them outside in two weeks (I’m in southern Idaho)? Or in a pot until our temps do warm up?

Right now we are having mid 30-40’s at night, and 50’s in the day. But that is slowly inching up to 60’s, and won’t be long before we are in the 70’s. Although we always have another cold spell or two breeze through in April and May.

When would be a good time to add them to my garden for the duration?

yes, they need to be planted outside for continued prechill and germination, these canbe quite slow. do not give up, they will eventually show. Plant them to the gearden as soon as the roots fill the pot or after the second set of true leaves form. have faith in natural processes and don’t worry
