Tropical hardwood. Protect from frost. Stately tree that bears the fruity pods, sweet/sour, a stomachic, culinary and beverage ingredient. The pulp of the pods is high in tartaric acid and pectin and is used as a natural food stabilizer. It is a good source of Niacin, calcium, phosphorus, iron, thiamine and riboflavin. The tamarind pod is a highly significant food in the African continent. Seeds are quite large. Tree prefers full sun and dry to mesic soils. Our stock are currently in 3-gallon pots. We suggest potting up to 5-gal pots and greenhousing or transplanting outside (Z 10-12) on receipt. Space trees 30 feet apart.
