Sage, White (Salvia apiana) potted plant, organic

(15 customer reviews)

$9.50$22.95

Family:  Mint (Lamiacea)

Hardy to Zones 7 to 12, otherwise grown as a potted plant and protected from frost

(Sacred White Sage) Woody perennial native to California.  White sage prefers sandy soil in the full sun. Probably the most popular of all plants for smudging, the leaves dry down almost white and burn with an intense smoke.  Plants grow quickly during the summer and may be trimmed back in the fall, after flowering is complete.  White sage loves a dry, sunny exposure. Plant 2 to 3 feet apart. Rosette usually grows to 2 or 3 feet tall, and flowering spikes may reach 6 feet.  Regarding harvest:  If the plant is small and weak, do not cut it back.  If the plant is growing fast and has sized-up (more than a foot across and a couple of feet tall), then I find that the fronds can be cut back twice during the growing season, and that the plant will quickly replace those branches with new ones.  Finally, just prior to frost, it makes sense to cut the plant back quite significantly, creating a rounded form between 1 and 2 feet tall, which seems to improve winter hardiness.

Potted plant, Certified Organically Grown

I am on the waitlist for the three pack of white sage Plants. Will you be stocking three plant orders this year? Or will I need to order single plants only?

Hi Peter, I had no idea you could even do that. White sage is being offered this year as singles. The small plants are nice, I started them from fresh organic seed as soon as it was harvested. A great cycle. richo

Hi. I just received my first plant order, including White Sage, and I am so very pleased. Such meticulous care in packaging and lovely, healthy
plants. Definitely will be ordering from you again. Question: Plant had part of the root looped above the soil… I should bury it (am transplanting into gallon pot of sand now), right?

hi carrie, thanks for the report, glad you got good plants, probably best to plant the white sage to the same depth as you see it in the pot. sometimes the roots do protrude a bit. richo

Thank you! So happy to let you know that the protruding root (I planted as you said) now has 3 places with new healthy growth. The original plant is doing great as well. Y’all are wonderful. Appreciate your kindness and quality.

  4. Question

    Breanna

Living in West Michigan (currently being early April) and if I grew these indoors (kept by a window to always get sun) would they survive? Do I have to replant them every year? I plan on getting a potted plant and a packet of seeds so I’m curious. I’ll be making sage smudge sticks (I use a lot of sage so I thought growing my own would be a good investment).

I’m in Bay Area, East Bay near Carquinez Strait. We are having the typical for us winter. Rainy then warm the next day, cold morning and evenings, warm to hot mid day. The spring tonic growths are already coming up everywhere. I’m wondering when would be ideal for me to plant this sacred plant? Wait till it’s warmer, dryer? Please put me on list of when they’re ready to ship.

      Hi Kathryn,
Thanks for your interest in white sage. I think you could plant this in SF anytime now. The winter is mild enough, and you are close to the native distribution. My advice is to order right away and put your desired delivery date in the “customer comments” field. That makes the process quite efficient.

      Hi Martha,
We could put some of our larger plants to gallon pots and sell them in April or so, that is a good idea. You can stay in touch to see how that turns out. We ship plants mainly via US postal service within the US only. We have shipped hundreds of thousands of plants and we do have a very good system and success rate.

    Hello Rambe,
White sage can be grown in pots and I’ve learned that a wide and shallow pot works best for them. Several of my mother plants were planted in deep flats and then threw their roots into the gravel of the greenhouse–they are the happiest.

Hello Hannah, We grow all our plants ourselves, in the case of White Sage, from our own organically grown white sage seeds. We started the largest population last year so the first plants that go out will be about 8 inches tall. Richo

      Hello Esther,
We might list white sage again this fall. We have a large population of these coming on. Please click the “waitlist” option to get an automatic e-mail when we do enable purchasing. However given your circumstance I would wait until spring and then plant it outside. White sage does not like to be held indoors for the winter. A heated greenhouse is fine, but they suffer on the windowsill.
