$4.95

Family: Mint (Lamiaceae)
Hardy to Zones 5 to 9
(Kashmir Sage) Herbaceous perennial giving rise to loose racemes of large, deep throated blue flowers in second year.  The plant flowers over a longer period of time than most sages. Salvia hians is a particularly robust sage, with resinously sticky foliage that gives off an enticing, fruity aroma, even at a distance.  Native to the Himalayas, the plant is used to make tea. Traditional usage (TCM): Secondary source of Dan-shen.  Plant prefers full sun and fast draining soil.  Sow in spring.  Use a fast-draining mix, barely cover seeds with soil, tamp securely and keep evenly moist and warm until germination.  Work plants up in pots and transplant to landscape at 1 to 2 feet apart.
10 seeds/pkt., Open Pollinated, Untreated, NO GMO’s

My Kashmir Sage is HUGE! It is beautiful! I think I bought the seeds about 3 or 4 years ago.

Hello Cena, Very good work–it is certainly inspiring to see how big and healthy some specimen plants can get, and how very much they enliven all related species, like bees, butterflies, ladybugs and . . . gardeners. Richo

I have two plants that are either Dan Shen or Kashmir Sage from Strictly Medicinals. They are so similar looking. How can I tell the difference? And if I cannot, can they be used interchangeably?

Hello JT, It should be possible to know which is which. Dan-shen has compound leaves and many small purple flowers. Kashmir sage has solitary leaves in a wide rosette and makes fewer, much larger flowers. I would tend towards using the Dan-shen medicinally, although the Kashmir sage is a secondary source. Richo

Dan-shen (Salvia miltiorrhiza) will grow easily for you. No reason to go for the variants unless you’re after the rare and unusual–just grow the standard form–it is highly adaptable and can even be direct-seeded with good results. r
