Safflower, Zanzibar (Carthamus tinctorius) seeds, organic

$3.95$18.10

Family:  Aster (Asteraceae)

Annual. 100 to 120 days to harvest

Native to the Mediterranean, flowering yellow-orange-red to 4 feet tall.   Safflowers have highly colored yellow-red flowers that make an inexpensive substitute for saffron.  The petals can be successfully infused in oil, producing a deep orange color.  Plant prefers sun to part shade and poor, dryish soils.  Large seeds are best direct-seeded after last frost.  Harvest flowers once they open, or let mature to produce the oil-rich seed.  Space plants 1 to 2 feet apart.

  1. Question

    Prachi

Are the leaves of these edible? In our culture we used to eat the greens of this plant. But I am not sure if it’s the same variety.

Hello Prachi, I believe them to be edible but prickly. I never ate them myself although I have chewed the seeds and they are good. Richo

    Tim Child

Can these safflowers be planted in a circle around a Hopi Black Dye Sunflower or are the water and nutrient needs different?
