Rattlesnake Master (Eryngium yuccifolium), packet of 50 seeds, organic

$2.95

Family:  Carrot (Apiaceae)

Hardy to Zones 4 to 8

Herbaceous perennial native to the prairie states. Multiple globular capitulas rise up on a yucca-like plant 3 to 5 feet tall. Makes a decorative dried flower. Traditional usage (American Indian): snakebite, toothache, kidney, antidote to poison, dysentery, nosebleeds. The plant prefers mist soils in the full sun to part shade.   Flowers green-white. These are a stately, friendly, and desirable addition to any herb garden, and the plant is unusual enough to elicit appreciation and thoughtful inquiry on the part of visitors.  Sow in cold soils of the early spring.  Alternately, give 30 days cold, moist refrigeration, then sow warm.  Barely cover seed, tamp well and keep evenly moist until germination.  Thin or transplant to 1 to 2 feet apart.
