$4.95

Family:  Poppy (Papaveraceae)

Generally fall-sown in Zones 7 to 10 and spring-sown in colder zones

Swift-growing annual or overwintering annual–a choice selection from Europe.  Traditional usage (TWM): analgesic. Large, upright plants to 4 feet tall produce multiple flower buds that curve like the necks of swans. Flowers frilled and very dark purple.  The entire blossoming and capsule-forming cycle proceeds slowly over the space of a few weeks, providing an extended flowering show–much longer flowering period than we’ve seen with other somniferums.  The buds split, revealing the dark purple pompoms that give way to weighty pods.  In the Western or Southern states, sow with the first fall rains.  In the Eastern or northern states, sow in the very early spring, as soon as the ground is thawed.  Sow outdoors by mixing the seed with sand then strewing on a good seedbed and press in.  Once the seedlings produce true leaves, thin them to about 6 inches apart.  The plants prefer a full sun position and very fast-draining soil, with plenty of nitrogen (compost or composted manure).
