Family:  Aster (Asteraceae)

Hardy to Zones 5 to 8

(Spanish Chamomile, Mount Atlas Daisy, Akarkara) Herbaceous or evergreen perennial native to the Mediterranean basin and the Himalayas.  Similar in growth to Roman chamomile, plants flower to about 1 foot tall in spring or early summer, presenting pretty white and yellow blossoms. Traditional usage (Ayurvedic and TWM): nervine tonic, paralysis, sialagogue, dental woes, testosterone.  The dried, ground roots are pungent and may be used as a flavor enhancing spice in avante garde cookery.  Plant prefers full sun and fast draining soil.  Sow seed in the spring or any time in the greenhouse or under lights.  Germination is in 4 days to 2 weeks, without the need for cold stratification.  After the seedlings attain their second set of true leaves, individuate to small pots, and grow on that way for awhile before transplanting to the garden.  The plants may be set out at 6 inches to 1 foot apart.  It is also possible to grow this fast germinating seed by sowing directly in the garden and thinning seedlings to 6 inch centers.
