Family:  Legume (Fabaceae)

Annual.  80 days

Early spring annual vining to 3 feet tall.  Hypertendril peas have been selected by Alan Kapuler and Peace Seedlings.  They make masses of twisted tendrils that help hold the plants upright and are also edible and tasty.  I  liked growing these peas.  They germinated well and held their own through some unseasonably hot spring weather.  The hypertendrils held fast to the trellis (which was not strictly needed, but helped anyway) and the tendrils themselves provided food for us when the plants were only about a foot tall.  We put the tender tendrils in our salads and they tasted very good, diversified our salads.  I like to eat peas right in the field and it seems like it takes forever for them to “make.”  Edible tendrils are a good appetizer to the feast.  The highly colored flowers are nice, too.  The pods are sweet, filled with 6 to 8 large peas each.  Any pods left uneaten may be matured on the vine, collected and used as soup peas.  I noticed a grouse going after mine, and that was it, I harvested everything (the peas, not the grouse) and shelled it.  A tasty, productive and disease-resistant pea.  Cultivation:  Sow in the spring as soon as the ground can be worked, or sow in the summer for fall harvest.  Peas prefer a rich, well-rested soil in a sunny position.  They may be sown in a row, 4 inches between peas, barely covered with soil, tamped and kept evenly moist until germination, which may take up to 2 weeks in the cold soils of early spring, but is faster in warm soils of summer.  Do not thin them–every seedling is precious.

10 seeds per packet, certified organically grown

Drought was terrible last summer at my old place so I got to enjoy these for maybe a week but they grew fast and they were really good, hopefully they’ll be back soon, I’m in a better place to grow and I’d love to really grow these
