$4.95

Family: Vervain (Verbenaceae)

Hardy to Zones 8 to 12, otherwise grown as an annual, 90 days to harvest

(Mayan Mint, Aztec Sweet Herb, Phyla scaberrima, Phyla dulcis) Perennial creeping plant with very showy purple leaves and upright cone-like flowers, native to Mexico and South America.   Does well in pots, especially hanging pots, as it is a draper.  The taste is somewhat like stevia, but with aromatic overtones and no stevia aftertaste.  This is a pre-sweetened tea herb, and it is really handsome in the garden, as well.  We find that the plant prefers fast-draining but nutrient rich soils and drapes admirably over rock walls or other garden features.  It will send out runners and root in, but it is severely affected by frost so for most gardeners in the temperate north invasiveness remains more of a goal than a problem.  Sow seed in flats in the early spring and work up the plants to transplantability, then transplant.  Plant prefers full sun to part shade.  Space plants 1 to 2 feet apart.

    Much better than Stevia

Mayan mint is wonderful and very easy to take care of! To me the taste is not overpowering and does not have the bitter aftertaste of Stevia which is a definite plus. I especially like putting it in with fresh fruit. I got this plant last spring and grow it indoors since I’m in Zone 6. I did put it outside once summer arrived, but for some reason it let me know that being placed outside in Ohio was not where it wanted to be and is happily back inside.

We grew ours in Caldwell TX in a wooded area. It grew well there, and it was spread around our property by birds. We moved and took some with us, but it never got planted here. We list it in a wildfire.
