“Arnica,” Mexican (Heterotheca inuloides), packet of 50 seeds

$4.95

Family:  Asteraceae

Hardy to Zones 7 to 9

(Telegraph plant, Camphorweed) Herbaceous perennial to 3 feet tall, flowering sunny yellow.  The name “arnica” is a misnomer although there are some similarities between this plant and true Arnica, vis. a vis. they are both in the family Asteraceae, they are used in traditional medicine as topically applied antiinflammatories, they both flower yellow, and they are both pollinated by syrphids. Mexican “arnica” is an interesting plant for the apothecary garden, very commonly used in Mexican herbalism, and will not hybridize with true arnica.  Plant prefers regular garden soil, a sunny position and moderate water.  Press seeds into surface and keep warm, evenly moist and in the light.  Germination is rapid.  Space plants 2 feet apart.

Packet of 50 seeds, open-pollinated, untreated, no gmo’s

hi Linda, Thanks for staying in touch. Not sure what is meant by “most of these herbs” but arnica is definitely deer resistant. Sesquiterpene lactones are no substitute for mucilage in a deer’s repertory. Translation: deer like things like chicory, mallow and dandelion, not arnica. richo

Hello Heiderose, Mexican arnica is not a true arnica although it is used as such. Arnica montana the original official Arnica species. Please read about it in “Making Plant Medicine” and “Growing Plant Medicine.” What an amazing and super functional herb! Richo

  2. Question

    Susanna Murray

Is there no chance of getting “true” arnica? I know it’s been endangered by over use but we do want to use the real deal if available, right?
